During November Steve McArthur visited the Nickerson-Zwaan Mediterranean regional brassica trial days held in Israel. This was a good opportunity to share trial results with colleagues from Australia, South Africa, Spain, Cyprus, Turkey, Greece, The Netherlands and Israel. New introductions that look very promising. The breeding strength of Nickerson-Zwaan in cabbage is expanding to take in many market segments. Their new introductions look set to further improve the yields for New Zealand brassica producers. Leading New Zealand brassica grower Kirit Makan also joined the congress in Israel and was impressed with the wide range of brasscia varieties. 

 

10-284 f1, an autumn harvest cauliflower that produces a high number of heart leaves, a waxy blue green leaf, medium upright frame that supports a dense white curd.

17-1040 f1, white cabbage with bluegreen leaves, HR to fusarium, this has a flat hamburger shape and nice internal structure.

17-1167 f1, white cabbage that is  highly IR to Xanthomonas, produces 2.5kg flat round heads. Good internal quality with excellent field holding ability. Suitable for summer crops as well as overwintering. Very nice leaf habit, big and dense heads.

13-375 f1,a new red cabbage that is very early to mature, has been working well in our NZ trials, has a round shape and nice internal structure.
